Have you ever wondered what all the fuss is about? Bendy people, weird breathing, balancing, funny looking poses……..Let me tell you about my experience with yoga.

I have always been an avid fitness fan and given a choice of a hardcore high intensity class or Yoga it was hardcore exercise all the way! I used to think it was a waste of exercise time to do anything that involved lying down on a mat. Then I hit my mid 30’s and started to get pain in my knees. After X-rays and MRI scans I was diagnosed with arthritis. What does that mean? I said. Can I still exercise? (I mean WHAT? The thought of having to stop!!). Yes, but at the moment you need to calm it down. Do something less impact like…..yoga!

Ok ok I can hear you laughing. So I was a member of a gym back then. I used to do “the double” on a Monday (Body Pump followed by Spinning), circuits on a Tuesday, Aerotone then swim on Wednesday…..you get it? They didn’t offer Yoga but what they did do was Body Balance on a Thursday. A mix of Tai Chi/Yoga/Pilates. Reluctantly, I went along. I was probably the youngest in the room by about 10 years and was cringing inside about being there, having already decided it was going to be WAY too easy for me.

The class began with some Tai Chi, got the energy flowing and the body warmed up. Yep this is okay, nice and easy. Then the sun salutations began. I started sweating, a lot! My wrists hurt, dropping down to the floor slowly from plank position was really hard and as I looked around the room, I realised these older people were way more flexible than me. I was so humiliated inside, and right then I knew that I would be back because I wanted to be that flexible, especially at that age!! And I can honestly say that I’ve never looked back. When I was pregnant with my second child I went to pregnancy yoga and have continued going and getting stronger ever since. My improved strength and flexibility have aided with my more intense workouts (yes, I still do them!), but I cherish my Yoga time. It’s for me. It helps with stress. It’s for my mind as well as my body.  I love it. Here are just some of the benefits of Yoga:

  • keep your muscles strong
  • prevents joint problems
  • improves your posture
  • improves metabolism
  • increases blood flow
  • makes you flexible
  • strengthens your bones
  • improves your memory
  • calms your nervous system
  • brings harmony to your life
  • helps you to relax

Why wouldn’t you do it?

When I opened the Fit Shack in November 2016, Yoga was the first class that was held there and it’s going from strength to strength.

So if, like me, you’ve ever wondered what it’s all about, why not come to one of our Beginner Yoga workshops where you can learn all about it and strike a few poses, or join one of our classes on Thursday morning at 9.30am or Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. You might surprise yourself!
